17 Months

Could he really almost be a year and a half? Not quite yet. Not for another month. But it hurts my heart just thinking that in one month he will be that age!
But for now...at seventeen months he is a busy monkey who is so loving and demanding at the same time it is exhausting. He gives the best hugs. He grabs onto your shirt by your shoulders and hangs on as tight as those little arms can. He will always lay his head on your shoulder and loves to be rocked or swayed. Loves the rocking chair at night. Loves to snuggle in the mornings and after naps. If you ask for a hug and kiss he comes running at your with a wide open wet mouth and arms open. He waves and says that high pitched Hi! to everyone that walks in a room. He is eager to blow kisses goodbye and a quick wave when we leave also.
He wants what he wants when he wants it. A bit like his mother in this aspect that he wants things done yesterday. He is communicating much better these days with signing and some words. To the point where we at least can figure out what the heck he is saying. The other night he was really whining in bed. 45 minutes had passed and he was still whining. So I went up there and picked him up, asked him if he wanted me to rock him (head shake no), okay. I asked him if he wanted more water (head shake yes and a frantic sign for milk/drink), okay. Then I saw his little finger point to Parker's empty bed and then to the door. I already knew that Parker had gotten out of his bed and snuck into ours, but apparently Emmitt had seen him do it and wanted him back in his bed. So we walk to our bedroom as Emmitt's little finger leads the way and spot Parker sprawled out sleeping in mommy and daddy's bed. Then Emmitt made the shhhhh sign with that finger and a loud hiss that meant brother is sleeping. I walked him back to his bed, gave him his cup of water, layed him down and not a peep came out of him until morning.Bear and I keep saying how different it is this time around (second child). We swear we had Parker doing way more than Emmitt at this age and that we often still refer to Emmitt as "just a baby". When in all reality he is almost a year and a half.
He is so determined to do things that I really have to sit back and let him learn by trying. I have to make a conscious effort to not do things for him, like in stead of placing him at the top of the slide, but letting him try the ladder. With assistance of course when he screams for it.We realize that he is in fact doing many of the things that Parker did at this age. I have the pictures to go back and see what we were doing back then, thank God, because some days my memory is just gone.
Emmitt realized that it was a little scary to go down the big slide looking at the landing, so he took it feet first on his belly and did it again and again and again. Big smiles each time he went down. He is much better at the park these days. Not as much sand eating, if any. Stays by me where we are playing. Sand throwing? Well that's another issue. He just can't resist that feeling between his fingers and just has to toss it in the air. When you tell him no, no he just shakes his head no at you. Like, yeah I totally agree with you, no, no. But then tries it again with a sideways glance to see if you are really gonna catch him in the act.
This age is really fun. I love the talking and communicating. He can really show us what he wants. He tries everything his brother does, so in some ways he is doing more than he should. One of his favorite pass times is to be pushed in the doll stroller by Parker. They call it their snowmobile?! He will finally sit through as many books as I want to read to him. He will try most foods when they are on his plate. I am not sure he is growing with the little food he eats, but he is. He is still holding his own at 21 pounds. His white blond hair gets a comment out of every body. Lil' Toe-head. I don't love that phrase but what are you gonna do? Bear and I were both bleach blond babies too. It goes great with those brown eyes! I think my hubby still thinks there is some debate on whether or not they will still change color. I mean he is almost a year and a half. Almost. But not yet. He is still "just a baby".
Speaking of baby. (no were are not). But I reminded Bear that when Parker was 18 months we started trying for a second and a month later we were pregnant with Emmitt. Wow was all he could say.

Still growing...16 Months

Maybe we'll call this Emmitt's face-maker button. Yeah, that sounds about right. Just press (gently) in the middle of his forehead and you'll get a different facial expression every.single.time.

Oh those eyes Emmitt
At Sixteen months this kid knows which look to pull on and how to use it well. He can literally give you one look and you know what he is thinking. Those eyes are the path to his train of thought. He gets such excitement in those eyes when he sees you when you first walk in the room, like you've been away on a long vacation.
He just has to glance at a light switch and then give you the questioning look, like; come on walk me over to it so I can turn it on and off. And when you do, his eyes light up and he thanks you with them.
He can scowl and scream when he wants something that he can't get by brute force. He still squeals to make himself heard and glares at, mainly his brother, us when he knows he is being told no.
He can ask the simplest question with a look of his eyes and a grunt or point. Daily he "asks" us for a granola bar. In the morning he walks over to the snack drawer, pulls out a granola bar, speed walks over to somebody who can open it, gives you the look, shakes his head yes and hands you the bar. All without saying a word. His little mind is just racing and his eyes are full of excitement wanting that granola bar.
At Sixteen months, he still loves to cuddle. This kid gives the best hugs I have ever known. He snuggles onto a shoulder and just can't get enough of the crook of your neck. And those little hands squeeze tight and hang on to your clothing. He snuggles all throughout the day, more when he is just going down to sleep or just waking up. At bedtime he does not want to be rocked or held still. He points to his crib and says his "yes". You ask, "do you wanna go in your bed?" and he is already shaking his head yes. We lay him down, cover him up, give him a stuffed animal of his choice and a full sippy cup of water. If you don't do it in that order, he is looking for the cup of water...if it's empty, you better be running to the bathroom to fill it up. He proceeds to chug more than half and then quietly puts himself to sleep for a good 10-12 hours. Not a peep out of that kid at bedtime. He is still taking a good afternoon nap each day. At least 2-2 1/2 hours after lunch. Some days we stretch it a little later and he doesn't seem to mind. But by 7:30 or so he is ready for bed.
He loves bath time. He has started laying on his belly and "swimming" in the tub. If you give him anything that he can turn into a cup, he will and then drink the bath water repeatedly, until you have tossed out all the toys that can be used that way. Then he resorts to sucking on the rag and re-dipping it in the water.
He is easy to please, goes with the flow and predictable. He operates on his own schedule, other than sleeping. He rarely eats a "meal" when we all sit down to eat. He sits in his chair with us to get used to the routine, but doesn't ever eat a meal. He grazes all day like I do. If we decide to go outside, he'll go to and play nicely until it's time to come in. If I pick out a couple of books and sit on the couch, he sits with me until we are done reading them. But if he decides he wants to be held and I am making supper he screams, clings to my legs, bangs his head on the floor, and cries until something with that scenario changes. I usually buckle him in the chair and give him a snack and that is why he never eats when supper is actually finished. He is currently incapable of sharing. Whatever his brother has, he wants. He will attempt to take it away by force and scream until Parker comes running to say he had it first. We are really trying on making Emmitt not get his way and to share or find something else to play with until the coveted object is available. For awhile we were catching ourselves just telling Parker to give it up so that awful squealing noise would stop! Which we realize isn't fair and isn't teaching Emmitt anything.
That's how you get the babies of the family (like me and my husband)...I'll let you in on a little secret, even though we both are the babies of the family, I still get my way most of the time :)
I can't believe how different this summer is going to be from last summer. It's only going to get easier and better. We have some fun activities planned for the summer and I look forward to them each day.

Watch Me Grow 11 Months
I think I need to change this title to Watch Me Walk. It took me many tries to get him to actually stay in the chair long enough for me to take a freakin' picture. Only one more in this series. It is crazy that almost a year has gone by!
He took his first steps at 9 months 3 weeks. Like 2 steps and then the full body dive into your arms. But as this 10 month progressed he got a little more brave each time. In his baby book I wrote down 10 1/2 months in the "started walking" category. Ironically it is the exact age Parker walked at.
"up...not so sure I am going to sit here for ya mom"
"yeah, I am really not going to stay in this chair mom"
"here I come to get you, man this is fun"

Bear was gone for another week to Grand Portage when Emmitt really took off walking. So that Friday night he came in the door and Emmitt went toddling around the corner to him, saying "dad-da" the whole time. We had been working on him saying dad-da the whole week also. I had "trained" him over Thanksgiving to say "ma-ma" so I figured we should work on the other. And he got it! It was as if on cue to walk to daddy and say his name. Bear just stood there and smiled and then asked...did he just say daddy? It was priceless.

I have started a little planning for the first birthday party. I really wasn't sure what to do. But since our crazy families dressed up for Parker's party I figured "why not". I'm creative enough to come up with something...so as I was talking to one-of-my-ladies she mentioned she stuck her kids in the little plastic pool with their cake to smash and eat. Then I got to thinking...how cute would he be in his little Hawaiian board shorts in that pool covered in frosting? WAY CUTE! So we are having a beach party in the middle of February! Considering it was -40F a beach party sounds pretty darn good. So crazy family-get your Hawaiian shirts out and flip flops-we are headed for warmer days!

As you can see we got ourselves a big boy haircut. I tried to just trim up around the ears and his bangs and butchered the poor kids hair. So we decided to get him in to Tina. This is the exact age Parker was when he got his first haircut. He was fairly happy yesterday when I took pictures, even though he must feel rotten. Last Wednesday the flu hit Emmitt and I. Friday it hit Parker and last night it got the best of Bear. Now we all just have another head cold.

Emmitt was so calm about the whole throwing up thing...I had been up that night myself and was laying awake at 1 am when I heard him sputtering and gagging in his crib and had Bear go check on him. Of course Emmitt was covered in puke and Bear starts gagging and repeating "oh no, oh no, oh no". He starts throwing up by just changing the bedding! I get Emmitt in the tub and he is smiling at me! Kids are resilient. He was calm as can be and I attempt to clean him up. I'm hanging onto the side of the tub so I don't faint and Bear is throwing up. I think at this point I said "you are such a pansy!". But Bear never did ask me for help changing out the crib, he made it. And Parker? He slept through it all. Bear rocked Emmitt back to sleep and the following morning we felt like we were run over by a mack truck.

Friday night at bedtime I hear Parker running into the bathroom, I go and check on him and he is standing over the toilet. I couldn't believe this kid spared me scrubbing carpets! At 3 years old, he has (sadly) puked enough to know to get to the toilet. So we slept on the pull out couch and he was sick all night.

We managed to feel okay throughout the weekend. Just really weak. Bear and I mustered up the strength to make Lefse all day Saturday, while Tammy had the boys. And Sunday we only left the house for Parker's Sunday School Pageant. He was a sheep and didn't make a peep! The pageant was so cute and Parker had been practicing his Baa, Baa Little Sheep song and knew it by heart...come time to sing it up front at church...no way. He stood there and looked at all the people. But he stayed up there! I was waiting for him to come back and sit with us and not participate at all.

With all the new snow I'll be sure to ski, if it could only warm up a bit now.

I did manage to take the boys' pictures yesterday in their matching sweaters for our Christmas card...I just ordered them last night so let's see how fast Shutterfly can get them to me?! It might be a New Year's card I'll be sending out.

Watch Me Grow

9 months already! I took these pictures the other day and laughed so hard at this kids expressions. Especially the tongue-sticking-out one. I swear I try to comb that hair down...it has a Harry Potter mind of it's own. He kept grabbing his foot and flicking his leg up and down in the air and spitting at me. He is really into babbling these days and finally does the ba-ba-ba-ba sound when you pat his mouth with your hand. He is standing unsupported for a moment or two. Once he realizes he is standing he sits on his butt very quickly. I am not ready for a walking baby just yet! No real sounds or words though, not even da-da or ma-ma. Happy baby. Last night he played in the laundry basket full of whites for an hour. Still in the puppy or carry-something-in-your-mouth stage. It's hilarious to see him crawling as fast as he can with something in his mouth and breathing fast through his nose. I love this age!

Watch Me Grow

8 Months Old

8 Months and 8 teeth. Very busy this month. Continues crawling like a mad man. He momentarily will let go of what he is holding on to and realize he is standing unsupported, waivers and sits on his butt. Happy baby unless his teeth are bothering him. Still chooses to fight the bottle when he feels like it. 5 outta 7 nights he sleeps straight through, the other couple of nights he screams and acts like he is starving and is completely calmed down by nursing. Which I was refusing to do for awhile, but now decided is just plain easier to nurse him and go back to bed.

He is sporting his new "mummy's boy" shirt which is so perfect...he is a momma's boy and of course it's in honor of my favorite holiday.

Daddy has been working on the road these last couple of weeks, so it's been just me and the boys (and all my family that is available to help me out to keep me from losing my mind). We made a trip out of town last weekend (more to come on that) and now daddy is back home at night, right where he should be. Right in the middle of the living room floor playing with the boys...

Watch Me Grow

Here is the latest in the Watch Me Grow Series. 7 Months and happy! Check out those teeth. He currently has 2 top and 3 bottom with another bottom coming up real soon. He is officially crawling. We knew he wasn't too far from it, but now when he sees something he wants, he is off and can get it. One day he was crawling and the next he went straight to pulling himself up. He gets on either both knees or one knee and one foot. I was sort of hoping this one would just sit for the first year but it doesn't look like I am going to get my way. Is it all happening at warp speed or is it just me? Doesn't seem like that long ago we just came home from the hospital and were all tucked in for the remainder of the winter...

Watch Me Grow

Emmitt's Watch Me Grow chair picture

He popped the second tooth through the day after the first so here is the best attempt to get a shot of them both. He looks a little frightened but anytime you put your fingers near his mouth he tries to eat them.

Parker found these silly glasses and nose and wears them to "work". He packed up his baby's diaper bag and put them on and said goodbye to everyone in the house and off to work he went.

A close up of the actual tonsils! If you look directly in his mouth you can see how huge they are. We had him to the ENT on Wednesday and spent a whole 2 minutes in the doctor's office. He took one look and said those are "medium" sized. For real? we asked...they actually touch the uvula or hangy bally thingy. Nope, medium...not to worry, he is still too young. He also said if we keep getting strep throat this winter, or tonsillitis again and again, just to take him in to our physician and put him on an antibiotic. Unless it gets to be 3-4 times in 6 months we don't need them taken out. So we are "happy" with that and put at ease that he just has medium sized tonsils.

A 6 month pic of Emmitt. We spent the day of his half birthday at the clinic for shots and then me getting barfed on all day and him pushing those 2 teeth up! That was fun.

I had to get a picture of you in the sweater that Auntie Tammy knitted for Parker at this age. I know what you are thinking-a wool sweater in July?-well we live in the tundra and it was 40 something this morning-that constitutes sweater wearing!
